Scottish Winter Climbing: Lochnagar
On Boxing Day Tamsin and I headed to Royal Deeside to climb on Lochnagar. The snow is down to the road and what is normally a pleasant 2 hour approach turned into a 4 hour endurance test. I've picked a bad time to leave my skis in Chamonix!
The climbs are undoubtedly in full winter condition though and you could have climbed any mixed line. We chose Raeburn's Groove. At VII 7 this was ambitious at a midday start and it turned out to be so! We decided to finish our day on Raeburn's Gully (II/III) and soloed out to the plateau. We walked out to the valley in moonlight.
