Cogne - Ice Climbing
The Italian valley of Cogne is world famous for it's reliable and quality ice. Conditions are generally good from December to the end of February and this season is good. European Water Ice grades are generally 'one grade harder' than their Scottish counterpart i.e. WI 4 equates to Scottish V and you need to be proficient in placing screws on steep ground (you often just run out the crux in Scotland). Gavin came out to snowboard in Courmayer but joined me for a day to try out ice. He had previously climbed 7A and found plenty of adventure on the valley classic Cascade de Lillaz with it's direct start.
